The Continental tire portfolio for SUVs is one of the widest available. It offers a choice of six summer tire models for all-wheel-drive vehicles, ensuring that the right tire is available for the respective vehicle and its application. Original Equipment approvals have been granted by leading manufacturers of all-wheel-drive vehicles such as Audi, BMW, Land Rover, Mercedes, Porsche and Volkswagen. This year Continental has 38 new products in its range for 4×4s, SUVs and crossovers. The tires cover 15″ to 25″ rim diameters and 85% to 25% aspect ratios, with speed approvals up to 300 km/h (187 mph). Higher speeds are also possible under controlled test conditions.

The ContiCrossContact UHP

The ContiCrossContact UHP is a dedicated tire for extremely powerful SUVs of a sporty design. Its features, which include extremely short braking distances, safe characteristics in the wet and precise handling, were tailored specifically to suit the requirements of 4×4 vehicles like the Porsche Cayenne and BMW X5. The ContiCrossContact UHP is also available in 23″ to 25″ versions to meet specific tire refitment requirements. It thus covers a large proportion of the demand from the refitment and customising sector for V-, W-, Y- and Z-rated tires (from 210 km/h to 300 km/h – 131 mph to 187 mph). During the high-speed trials at the race circuit in Nardò, Italy, this tire managed to reach a speed of 330 km/h (206 mph) under controlled test conditions.

The Conti4×4Contact and Conti4×4SportContact

The Conti4×4Contact offers excellent traction on the road and in light off-road conditions, guaranteeing short braking distances, fast steering response and high directional stability. The offset rows of tread lugs generate only minimal rolling noise, whilst the wide longitudinal and lateral tread grooves substantially reduce the risk of aquaplaning. The Conti4×4Contact is particularly well-suited for use on compact and medium-heavy SUVs and crossovers, and has already obtained approvals from a wide-ranging list of vehicle manufacturers.

For faster and more powerful all-wheel-drive vehicles Continental recommends the Conti4×4SportContact. The tire’s asymmetrical tread pattern, featuring a compact outer shoulder section, ensures exceptionally high cornering stability, whilst the wide tread grooves disperse water quickly when driving on rain-soaked roads. The offset rows of tread lugs mean low rolling noise. The Conti4×4SportContact is fitted as Original Equipment to SUVs from European manufacturers.

The ContiCrossContact AT

The ContiCrossContact AT was developed for motorists intending to use their all-wheel-drive vehicles off the road, but also wanting to drive safely on asphalt. The open shoulder design of the new ContiCrossContact AT gives this tire good driving characteristics in difficult terrain, enabling it to interlock with loose ground, as well as ensuring safe cornering characteristics on rough tracks. The rugged tread compound avoids damage and notching during off-road driving, whilst allowing a good mileage performance to be achieved. The ContiCrossContact AT is available in most sizes with white sidewall lettering. Approvals go up to 210 km/h (131 mph) and the tire comes in 14″-18″ rim sizes.

The ContiCrossContact LX

The open outer shoulder of the asymmetrical ContiCrossContact LX means this tire also provides good driving and braking characteristics in light off-road conditions. This is moreover optically underlined by its tread pattern design, which bears similarities to tires for tougher off-road applications. On asphalt the ContiCrossContact LX provides a precise steering response, as well as very good straight-line stability. Three circumferential ribs with offset rows of tread lugs and pronounced sipes ensure good driving stability and at the same time low tire/road noise.

As the official tire of the second annual King of the Hammers, BFGoodrich® Tires looks to secure its second straight victory in Johnson Valley, Calif. on Friday, February 27. In 2008, BFGoodrich enjoyed capturing the top two podium positions in the ultimate off-road event.

This year’s King of the Hammers has nearly quadrupled in popularity with more than 150 drivers competing for 92 spots. The 100-mile course includes some of rock crawling’s most technical courses combined with wide-open off-road racing. More than 60 drivers will compete in a last chance qualifier that will take place on the infamous two-mile loop in Johnson Valley, Calif. known as the “Backdoor.” The last chance qualifier will take place on Thursday, February 26 and fill the remaining 10 spots.

For the second year straight, BFGoodrich teams will compete on a variety of tires, including the BFGoodrich Krawler™ T/A®KX tire and a newly redesigned BFGoodrich Baja T/A®KRT tire, which is a combination of the Baja T/A and Krawler designed specifically for rock racing and King of the Hammers.

“Similar to the Baja 1000, we believe King of the Hammers is a great platform for showcasing BFGoodrich Tires’ support of off-road racing and rock crawling,” said Frank DeAngelo, off-road motorsports manager for BFGoodrich Tires. “This year’s King of the Hammers is going to be one of the toughest courses that off-road racing has ever seen with two very different types of terrain. BFGoodrich Tires takes pride in providing specialized race tires such as the BFGoodrich Baja T/AKRT tire to respond to specific types of terrain. The technology we learn through motorsports is transferred directly to the tires, and this race is the ultimate.”

Last year, Shannon Campbell took the checkered flag after starting 43rd out of 44 total racers. Campbell, who raced on BFGoodrich Krawler T/AKX tires in 2008, will begin the 2009 race in the 65th position. Casey Currie, who finished second overall on BFGoodrich Krawler T/AKX tires, will begin in the 35th position.

Along with Campbell and Currie, other drivers to watch out for are the Lovell brothers, Brad and Roger, who will be driving in separate rigs. Roger looks to improve on his 17th place finish from 2008. Additional drivers to follow are Dean Bulloch, who finished eighth overall in 2008, and Tracy Jordan and Jason Scherer, who with both be driving new vehicles in 2009. Other notables include Jason Paulie and Joachim Schwiesow of Rock Runner Racing, 2008 W.E. Rock Pro Modified National Champion Derek West, female driver Nicole Johnson and Jeff Mello, who will kick off the event by starting first overall.

In addition to being the official tire for the race, BFGoodrich Tires will be lending pit and communications support to teams through its fleet of off-road motorsports vehicles. This immense undertaking involves more than 40 off-road enthusiasts and volunteers who donate their time to help King of the Hammers live up to its “ultimate desert race” status.

BFGoodrich Tires is also proud to be hosting an on-site media/hospitality area during the event. Located immediately opposite from tech and contingency and within close proximity of the start/finish, the hospitality area will serve as place for media to cover the race while enjoying complimentary snacks and beverages. Real-time race tracking and updates provided by RallyTrack.com will also be available at the media/hospitality area. Event officials and supporting sponsors will post press information and results for use in developing stories during the race.

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company today introduced the Wrangler DuraTrac, the latest addition to the Wrangler lineup of truck tires. The DuraTrac offers innovative new features, making it ideal for work applications, from construction and farming to landscaping and mining. The new Wrangler DuraTrac also delivers the performance pickup truck owners are looking for when they are off the job, and hitting the trails for recreational activities, like camping, fishing, and hunting.

There are more than 115 million registered light trucks on the road in the United States(1), with many serving as multipurpose vehicles for both work and personal recreational applications. With today’s challenging economic environment, American truck owners are increasingly looking for their vehicles to serve double-duty; taking them from hauling a heavy load to a construction site to heading off for a weekend of outdoor leisure and recreation.

“American truck owners are looking for more out of their pick-ups these days and expect them to perform well in both work and recreational applications,” said Melissa Montisano, Goodyear general marketing manager for light-truck and SUV tires. “Thanks to its many innovative features, the new Wrangler DuraTrac delivers to truck owners exactly what they need – a hard-working, attractively priced tire that is tough enough for the off-road job site, but still offers a good ride on the road.”

The new Wrangler DuraTrac is packed with innovative features to enhance both off- and on-road performance.

Goodyear’s proprietary TractiveGroove Technology(TM) provides the Wrangler DuraTrac with enhanced traction in deep mud and snow while the new tire’s combination of highly angled center tread blocks and zig-zag microgrooves offers enhanced lateral stability and traction in rain and snow, all while reducing road noise. In fact, Wrangler DuraTrac tires have earned the right to bear the European Commission Noise Symbol right on the sidewall, which indicates they meet stringent European standards for pass-by noise.

Self-cleaning, stepped shoulder blocks and thousands of biting edges help the new tire deliver enhanced off-road traction and handling, as well as snow traction worthy of the Rubber Manufacturers Association’s Mountain Snowflake Symbol, a designation for outstanding winter traction. To provide even more performance in harsh winter driving conditions, the Wrangler DuraTrac can be equipped with metal studs. (Consult state laws regarding use.)

To enhance the toughness and longevity of the tire, the new DuraTrac features a rugged tread rubber that helps resist tread block chipping, chunking and tearing, especially during heavy loading and towing applications. Wrangler DuraTrac also features a rim lock that helps prevent wheel slip for minimal balancing throughout the life of the tire.

“Because truck owners are proud of their vehicles and want to protect their investment, the new Wrangler DuraTrac features rugged styling and offers a built-in rim protector to help protect expensive wheels from accidental curb damage,” added Montisano.

Wrangler DuraTrac fits the most popular ‘working trucks’ on the road, offering 26 popular sizes covering 89% of this target segment. Fitments include all of the best-selling light- and full-size trucks today in 1/2-ton, 3/4-ton and one-ton applications. With its versatile mix of on- and off-road traction, the new Wrangler DuraTrac offers the perfect complement to the brand’s existing lineup, including the extreme off-road traction of the Wrangler MT/R and the rugged toughness and smooth quiet ride of the Wrangler SilentArmor.

Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations (BATO) today announced that it will lay off 67 hourly teammates from its Bloomington, Ill., facility, effective March 1.

With the unprecedented decline in construction — both residential and commercial — the demand for construction equipment, including tires, has evaporated. Due to the downturn in the economy, the slowdown in construction, and the resulting lower demand for small and medium size off road tires, production must be reduced in order to better align this inventory with demand.

“The dramatic downturn in the economy continues to plague every industry, including ours,” said Shawn Rasey, President, Off the Road Tire, U.S. & Canada, Commercial Tire Sales division, BATO. “Sales demand for off road tires began dropping in September 2008, the same time we began seeing a significant increase in inventory levels. We’ve made production reductions to accommodate the drop in sales — which have included eliminating discretionary overtime, reassigning teammates from parts of the plant hit by the economic slowdown to other areas of the plant, implementing a hiring freeze and cutting production days over the winter holiday — but unfortunately it hasn’t been enough.”

The decision was reached after serious consideration of all alternatives. Through natural attrition (e.g., retirements), the plant was able to avoid layoffs at the end of last year, even in the face of two major reductions in the plant’s scheduled production.

Additionally, a recent investment in new curing equipment at the plant that will allow increased production for the giant tire market — and the resultant 40 jobs it created at the plant — is allowing this layoff to affect fewer people than it would have without the investment. While still under tremendous pressure, the giant tire market has not yet experienced the same level of reduced demand as the small and medium size markets.

“While conscious of the current market volatility, we continue to take the longer view and invest in key segments to meet the demands of our customers,” Rasey said. “As the economy recovers, we fully expect the giant tire segment to become stronger and require the output from our capacity expansion.”

Teammates affected by the layoff who meet state criteria are eligible for unemployment benefits from the state of Illinois. Those currently enrolled in the company’s medical plan will have three months of coverage at the active rate and COBRA eligibility from that point forward.

As openings at the plant occur due to attrition, the company will fill those positions with teammates who are affected by the March 1 layoff. If the economy shows signs of recovery later this year, BATO hopes to be in a position to begin calling teammates back to work, perhaps as early as the 4th quarter, 2009, and hopes all teammates can return to work by the end of the 1st quarter, 2010.

Two Yokohama Tire-sponsored off-road figures took the podium this past weekend at the January 23-25 SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge in Laughlin, NV. Heidi Steele, a double off-road series champion in 2008, reached the winners’ platform in two classes, placing first and third in Classes 6 and 7, respectively, with co-drivers Ross Savage and Rene Brugger. Cameron Steele, two-time SCORE Person of the Year, took second (with co-driver Justin Smith) behind NASCAR racer Robby Gordon in the highly competitive Trophy Truck class.

SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge (Image: Yokohama)

Cameron Steele set the stage for a podium finish, driving the No. 16 Desert Assassins Chevrolet Silverado outfitted with Yokohama Geolandar M/T+(R) tires on Saturday, before tending to announcing duties at ESPN’s Winter X-Games in Aspen, CO. on Sunday. Co-driver Smith piloted the Trophy Truck for the remainder of the race for a second place win.

Heidi Steele, a champion in 2008 in both Best of the Desert and the SCORE Desert Series, moved up in class at Laughlin and won the Class 6 competition. Heidi also advanced from Class 7SX to Class 7, taking a third place finish.

“I’m working my way up to Trophy Truck class and this move up to Class 6 was really fun,” said Heidi. “It was the first time I’ve been able to race a more unlimited truck and also my first time doing the Laughlin Leap.” In both classes, Heidi drove off-the-shelf Yokohama Geolandar M/T+ tires on a Ford Ranger. “My Yokohama tires were exceptional,” said Heidi. “We had no flat tires this weekend even though the course was really rough.”

Yokohama-sponsored racers went six for six at Laughlin, competing in six classes and corralling six podium finishes, including Class 1-2/1600 where Adam Pfankuch and Brian Burgess placed first and second, respectively. Pfankuch also teamed up with Rick St. John to win the SCORE Lite Class.

“We’re looking forward to another season of record-setting racing with a queue of outstanding off-road drivers,” said Robert Dole, Yokohama product promotions manager. “We know our tires can conquer the challenging terrain and it’s exciting to see them tested to the maximum, giving us real life feedback that ultimately benefits our customers.”

The next SCORE race for Yokohama-sponsored teams is the Tecate San Felipe 250, March 13-15 in San Felipe, Mexico.

Competing with new BFGoodrich® All-Terrain tires, Volkswagen Race Touareg driver Giniel De Villiers scored the first Dakar win of his career last weekend in Buenos Aires. The South African’s American teammate Mark Miller followed him across the line to hand the Volkswagen team a resounding one-two finish at the first Dakar to take place in South America. For cross-country rally racing’s benchmark tire brand – BFGoodrich Tires – this year’s result takes its total score to nine Dakar wins.

Giniel de Villiers, Dr. Horst Neumann, Dr. Viktor Klima, Kris Nissen, Dirk von Zitzewitz (Image: Volkswagen Motorsport)

After taking command two stages from home, Giniel de Villiers claimed the 14th and final stage of the 2009 Dakar to put the seal on his first win on the world’s most punishing cross-country rally event, which was hosted for the first time in Argentina and Chile. The South African completed the distance with a lead of 8 minutes 59 seconds over his USA-based teammate Mark Miller, and 1 hour 46 minutes 15 seconds clear of another American stalwart, Robby Gordon (Hummer), who joined the Volkswagen/BFGoodrich Tires pair on the podium.

The German squad, which fielded a line-up of four race Touaregs, all competing on BFGoodrich All-Terrain tires dominated the 2009 Dakar from nearly start to finish, winning 10 of the 13 stages. The team’s Carlos Sainz (VW/BFGoodrich Tires) topped the leader board for the week but his hopes were all but lost when he crashed out on SS12.

The All-Terrain tire – which BFGoodrich Tires developed for its partner teams VW, BMW and Mitsubishi – proved extremely competitive over the event’s exceptionally varied terrain, which ranged from smooth, fast-flowing tracks to towering dunes. While making its Dakar debut in the hands of BMW’s and Volkswagen’s factory crews, the new tire won every stage but one. The only exception was yesterday’s penultimate test which saw victory go to the BFGoodrich Tires Rock T/A tire.

The new All-Terrain tire was used competitively for the first time in 2008 and has been designed to deliver improved dune-crossing ability, plus enhanced resistance to wear. Volkswagen and BMW both nominated the newcomer for the Dakar, while front-running privateers Tollefsen from Norway and Poland’s Holowczyc were given the chance to use the All-Terrain tire during the second half of the event, which notably featured the awesome dunes of the Atacama Desert. Both drivers went on to finish the rally inside the top-five overall.

BFGoodrich® Tires, the official tire of the SCORE Desert Racing Series, conquered Mexico’s Baja peninsula by earning its 22nd overall four-wheel victory at the 41st Annual SCORE Baja 1000. Facing a talented and diverse field of 347 starting entrants, BFGoodrich Tires drivers Roger Norman and Larry Roeseler mastered the rugged terrain of Mexico’s Baja peninsula to capture the overall four-wheel title. Their Norman Motorsports Ford F-150 Trophy-Truck outfitted with BFGoodrich Baja T/AKR off-road tires completed the 631.35-mile loop in 12 hours, 40 minutes and 33 seconds after logging an average speed of 49.81 miles per hour despite blinding dust and heavy fog near the end of the race. The win was also the second straight win of the year for Roeseler and Norman, who won the SCORE Terrible’s Primm 300 in September. This was also Roeseler’s fifth straight class win in the SCORE Baja 1000, having won the last four years driving with Troy Herbst in Class 1, all five occurring on BFGoodrich tires.

“I can’t say enough about BFG, what a wonderful, wonderful race,” said Roeseler. “I went all the way to the 400-mile mark with no flats and I’m pretty sure Roger went all the way to the finish with no flats, so we won the Baja 1000 with no flat tires. Winning Primm was a great race for us and gave great momentum for the team, so coming to the Baja 1000 with that momentum it got us going and with our pre-running and preparation, it all paid off.”

“I got in the driver’s seat in the lead thanks to Larry and I just had to bring it home, but that is easier said than done,” said Norman. “This is the toughest and greatest race in the world and we were racing against the greatest desert racers in the world. I knew we had to have a flawless day to win and we did. We had no flats; our BFGoodrich tires were tougher than the Baja rocks.”

Roeseler’s overall win gave him a race-record of 13 overall race wins, including three in the four-wheel division to add with his previous 10 motorcycle titles. It was also Roeseler’s 17th career class win in this race. Roeseler and Norman’s overall victory led the charge of BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Trophy-Truck competitors who were engaged in an epic battle and thusly claimed the top six finishing positions.

Second overall was off-road stalwart B.J. Baldwin, who finished in 12:45:26 in his Baldwin Motorsports Chevy Silverado outfitted with BFGoodrich Baja T/AKR off-road tires. Baldwin crossed the finish line just over four minutes behind Norman and Roeseler. The finish also earned Baldwin his second SCORE Trophy-Truck season point championship in the last three years.

Third overall was the father and son duo of Larry and Chad Ragland, who finished in 13:26:19 in their BFGoodrich-shod TForce Motorsports Toyota Tundra. Fourth overall went to last year’s race and season point champions Mark Post and Rob MacCachren. The pair came across with a time of 13:31:11 in their Riviera Racing Ford F-150 equipped with BFGoodrich Baja T/AKR off-road tires.

TForce Motorsports team owner Dan Friedkin, and his prominent teammates Danny Sullivan and Steve Hengeveld, finished fifth overall for BFGoodrich Tires in their ‘twin’ TForce Toyota Tundra in 14:34:55. Sullivan won the 1985 Indy 500 and Hengeveld’s resume includes 10 Baja 1000 class titles and seven overall motorcycle titles. The two-truck effort placed both TForce Motorsports SCORE Trophy-Trucks in the top five for the first time.

Justin Lofton along with his father Bob Lofton, brought home a sixth-place overall finish for BFGoodrich Tires in their Lofton Motorsports Chevy Silverado by crossing the finish in 14:51:08. Justin is pursuing a pavement-racing career and was a regular on the ARCA/Remax stock car series this year. Out of a field of 26 SCORE Trophy-Trucks, the top six overall finishers for the class and the race were equipped with BFGoodrich Tires.

“Taking home the top-six overall finishes in the SCORE Baja 1000 is no small feat,” said Roberts Kukainis, sponsorship manager for BFGoodrich Tires. “This year’s overall victory for Norman and Roeseler, plus the tremendous efforts from all the class winners at the 41st annual SCORE Baja 1000 is a testament to the great drivers, partners and the entire BFGoodrich Tires brand.”

BFGoodrich Tires also supported the entire Baja Challenge Class with Mud-Terrain T/AKM2 tires, which brought home the entire 13-car field. In addition to its BC Class support, BFGoodrich Tires also supported a Baja Challenge Class buggy driven by two-time Formula Drift champion, Samuel Hübinette, Championship Off-Road Racing (CORR) phenom, Casey Currie, rock-crawling champion, Tracy Jordan and retired Navy Seal, Bill Weber. The fearsome group was the foundation of the incredible BFGoodrich Tires BC-6 Team, which stepped up to the challenge of the Baja 1000, finishing fifth out of 13 starting entrants for the BC Class and 50th overall.

In addition to supplying its renowned Baja T/AKR tire, Baja T/AKRT tire and all-new Mud-Terrain T/AKM2 tire for the race, BFGoodrich Tires was on-site, providing extensive pit and communications support to more than 100 teams through its fleet of off-road motorsports support vehicles. More than 150 off-road enthusiasts/volunteers donated their time to help make the race happen. BFGoodrich Tires and Volkswagen of America also joined forces with partnerships through SPOT Satellite GPS Messenger, Aura 360, and DirtNewz.com, to host a new online experience www.2008SCOREBaja1000.com which included GPS tracking for all drivers in the SCORE Trophy-Truck, 1, 8, Stock Mini and 5/1600 classes plus live and streaming video and a real-time leader board during the race.

BFGoodrich Tires and Volkswagen of America also hosted an on-site media center during the event. Located within close proximity to the start/finish, the media center served as a fully functioning newsroom including computers, a multi-function copier, work areas, wireless internet, bag check storage, along with – every working journalist’s favorite – complimentary snacks and beverages. Real-time race tracking and updates provided by BFG Central were also available at the media center while SCORE International and supporting sponsors posted press information and results for use in developing stories during the race.

“Congratulations to all of our teams and a special thank you once again to Volkswagen of America and all of our volunteers and pit support specialists that help make this race possible,” said Kaz Holley, brand director for BFGoodrich Tires. “This race could not happen with out the dedication of all of those involved and this year was a prime example of why the Baja 1000 is the most amazing off-road race in history.”

The SCORE Baja 1000 is one of the most demanding off-road races known to man and runs 631.35 miles through Mexico’s rugged Baja peninsula over some of the worlds’ toughest terrain. This year’s race started for the 34th time and finished for the 19th time in Ensenada, 65 miles south of the U.S border from San Diego. During the past several years, teams equipped with BFGoodrich Baja T/AKR off-road tires, a purpose-built racing tire designed for use in desert and off-road racing, have been near perfect in the worlds’ most recognized off-road race.

The following is a complete list of BFGoodrich Tires 2008 SCORE Baja 1000 class winners:

Trophy Truck – Roger Norman/Larry Roeseler

Class 3 – Darren Skilton

Class 5 – Pedro Brassea

Class 10 – Lobsom Yee

Class 11 – Ramon Fernandez

Class 17 – Mike Shaffer

Stock Mini – Gavin Skilton

Stock Full – Chad Hall

BC Class – Chris Kemp

Sportsman Buggy – Jerry Smith

Nearly 347 entries from 29 states and 34 countries, competing in 28 Pro and six Sportsman classes for cars and trucks, plus additional classes for motorcycles and ATVs took part in this year’s SCORE Baja 1000. It’s the oldest and most well known of all desert races, and it remains the single most appealing accomplishment for any racer. Since 1967, the granddaddy of all desert races has been run over Mexico’s mysterious Baja peninsula every year except 1974 when the international fuel crisis forced a cancellation. This year’s SCORE Baja 1000 will be televised on a delayed basis as a one-hour NBC Sports special for the fifth consecutive year, airing on Dec. 14 at 1 p.m. (EST) on the NBC Television Network. It will also air on a delayed basis outside of the U.S. on ESPN International.

Off-Road racing and drifting will collide this year in Baja, as some new faces join the BFGoodrich Tires Baja Challenge team for the 41st running of the Baja 1000. Two-time Formula Drift champion, Samuel Hübinette, and Championship Off-Road Racing (CORR) phenom, Casey Currie, will team up with Baja veterans Tracy Jordan and Bill Weber for the grueling off-road endurance event, which starts and finishes in Ensenada, Mexico. The team of Hübinette, Weber, Currie, and Jordan will be competing in Baja Challenge Class buggies outfitted with BFGoodrich® Mud-Terrain T/A®KM2 tires and are among nearly 70 percent of the race teams in the SCORE Baja 1000 riding on BFGoodrich® tires.

“BFGoodrich Tires is fortunate to have such a mix of driving talent on our side down in Baja yet again,” said Joe Mazur, light-truck category manager, BFGoodrich Tires. “This contingent, combined with all the other teams competing in every other class, BFGoodrich Tires should be well represented at the award ceremony.”

Currie, a third generation off-road racer from Anaheim, Calif., began his racing career on motorcycles at the age of five and eventually transitioned into off-road trucks, earning a tenth place finish in the CORR Pro Lite division in 2006 and second place in 2007. Weber, a retired Navy Seal turned off-road enthusiast now works as a consultant for several off-road motorsports related companies supporting vehicle development and training. He is also a guide for Wide Open Baja Adventure Tours and has two Baja 1000 victories to his credit. Jordan, a rock-crawling pioneer who holds numerous rock-crawling championship titles, is also an off-road racing veteran, having run the Baja 1000 in 2004, 2006 and 2007.

Hübinette, aka,”The Crazy Swede” from Newport Beach, Calif., earned his nickname due to his uncanny driving skills which he honed by sliding cars around on arctic frozen lakes, has gained a reputation as one of the best drifters in the world. The two-time Formula Drift champion has been drifting competitively since 2003, but has never competed in a sanctioned off-road race before. Hübinette, who recently earned his second runner-up title in the 2008 Formula Drift series, is eager to experience the challenges of Baja for the first time.

“I’ve done some cool stuff and wild drifting maneuvers in competitions and movie stunts, but nothing is going to compare to the Baja 1000,” said Hübinette. “We’re going to be racing through the desert in some of the toughest conditions known to man and machine, with only a map to lead us. BFGoodrich Tires has been generous enough to give us this once-in-a-lifetime experience, so we hope to make them proud.”

This year, BFGoodrich Tires will be looking for its 22nd victory at the Baja 1000, an unprecedented winning record for off-road racing’s most famous and prestigious race. The BFGoodrich Tires BC Challenge team will be among many teams in Baja riding on BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/AKM2 tires, which brought home the entire 18-car Baja Challenge Class field at its Baja 1000 debut in 2007.

More than 350 entries from over 35 states and 15 countries, competing in 28 Pro and 7 Sportsman classes for cars, trucks, motorcycles and ATVs will take part in this year’s SCORE Baja 1000. It is the oldest and most well known of all desert races, and it remains as the single most appealing accomplishment to a driver. Since 1967, the mother of all desert races has been run over the Baja California peninsula every year except 1974 when the international fuel crisis forced a cancellation.

It’s no secret BFGoodrich Tires knows its way around the desert. For more than three decades of desert racing, BFGoodrich tires have dominated events and brought home more class wins and overall trophies than any other tire manufacturer. BFGoodrich Tires has also developed a racer support network that is as close to its heart as the competitors that race on their tires. Now BFGoodrich Tires’ dedication to its desert heritage is showcased in the most realistic off-road racing video game to date and appropriately titled, BAJA™: Edge of Control™.

Published by THQ Inc., the leader in off-road racing games, BAJA: Edge of Control brings the definitive off-road racing experience to the PS3 and 360 consoles with the largest unpredictable terrains in the most realistic off-road racing game ever created. Players build the ultimate off-road machine and conquer towering mountains and race along steep cliffs. Each vehicle featured in the game will be equipped with BFGoodrich tires and players will have the opportunity to race more than 160 sponsored vehicles, including Trophy Trucks and off-road buggies. Throughout the game, players will have the chance to attack vast unforgiving environments, thick mud and deep canyons, while stopping in at several BFGoodrich Tires pit areas to upgrade their machines with a full array of hundreds of authentic parts that affect each vehicle’s performance in the relentless cyber-desert.

“The BAJA: Edge of Control racing game pushes the envelope of gaming realism and detail to a whole new level and we are thrilled to be involved,” said Tom Jupena, marketing communications manager at BFGoodrich Tires. “BFGoodrich Tires lineage in desert racing is unparalleled and we appreciate what THQ has done to create such a realistic off-road gaming experience while sharing our passion for off-road racing with everyone.”

The BFGoodrich® Mud-Terrain T/AKM2 tire can take anything and throw it right back. Designed from the mud up, it is built to eclipse any obstacle – and any other tire – on the trail. BFGoodrich Tires is releasing phase II of the Mud-Terrain T/AKM2 sizes which will accompany the original sizes released in Sept. 2007. Due to consumer demand, starting on Aug. 1 the 285/75R16 BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain KM2 tire will be released with additional sizes following in August and September.

With more off-roaders going big these days in their choice of trucks, lift kits and tire sizes, BFGoodrich Tires has the solution for nearly every application. The BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/AKM2 tire will be available in 37 sizes ranging from LT215/75R15 to 42×14.50R20 to satisfy today’s core off-road enthusiasts.

“The Mud-Terrain T/AKM2 tire has proven that it can handle the turns and terrain on and off the trails,” said Joe Mazur, light-truck category manager for BFGoodrich Tires. “With the release of additional sizes the Mud-Terrain T/AKM2 tire will provide more off-road enthusiasts the opportunity to experience a tire that is truly built to handle the trails.”

Inspired by the BFGoodrich Tires Krawler™ T/AKX tire which is the most successful tire in rock-crawling history, BFGoodrich Tires has incorporated Krawler TEK® technology into the BFGoodrich Tires Mud-Terrain T/AKM2 TriGard® sidewall. Krawler TEK technology consists of three components that dramatically improve the sidewall strength as compared to the BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/AKM tire. These three components consist of: aggressive sidewall lugs, cut- & chip- resistant sidewall compounds and sidewall cords that are up to 33 percent stronger than the previous Mud-Terrain T/AKM tire. These advancements allow for more bite and sidewall protection along with increased strength and resistance to bruising caused by rocks and rough trails.

Sporting the same attractive raised white lettering on the sidewall as its predecessor, the Mud-Terrain T/AKM2 tire commands respect in all environments. Additionally, the Mud-Terrain T/AKM2 tire boasts exceptional even wear characteristics and outstanding grip due to its Krawler-inspired tread design and a more Linear Flex Zone across the face of the tread. The result is a tire with an aggressive look and appeal partnered with unbelievable traction either off-road or around town.
