Bridgestone’s aircraft tires are already being supplied for use on large aircraft with 100 or more seats, and the supply of tires for the MRJ, a regional jet in the 70- to 90-seat class, will further expand the scope of the company’s aircraft radial tire business.

The tires that Bridgestone will supply for the MRJ feature the advanced radial construction known as Revolutionarily Reinforced Radial (RRR). The features and advantages of RRR, as well as the aircraft using RRR tires, are outlined below.

1. Reduced fuel consumption and enhanced cost management
   1) The advanced radial construction with high elastic modulus/strength cords makes the tires lighter, which contributes to improved fuel efficiency and therefore a reduced environmental burden.
   2) The advanced radial construction also results in higher abrasion resistance, allowing for more landings of the aircraft before tire replacement, thus contributing to better cost control while maintaining quality.

2. Enhanced safety
   Due to RRR construction, which has outstanding durability, these tires will offer further enhancements in safety when compared to tires that do not feature the RRR construction.

Michelin Aircraft Tires supplies bias tires, radial tires and tubes for the worldwide commercial, military, regional and general aviation markets. In addition to supplying tires for the space shuttle and the brand new Emirates A380, Michelin recently delivered its 250,000th aircraft tire to the United States Navy in support of its Performance-Based Logistics (PBL) contract.

Jackson-Dawson also handles marketing communications and public relations for Michelin North America’s truck tire and earthmover tire divisions, event planning and logistics services for Michelin North America’s passenger car tire division, as well as partnering in various community projects. Michelin Aircraft Tire Company reached a historic milestone on Dec. 2, 2008 by delivering the 250,000th aircraft tire to the United States Navy in support of its Performance-Based Logistics (PBL) contract. The monumental MICHELIN® tire was for the nose landing gear of the U.S. Navy’s F/A-18 Hornet, the nation’s first strike-fighter. The tire was hand-delivered by Brett Carnes, director of North American military sales and Colleen Cassidy, program manager, both of Michelin Aircraft Tire Company, to Air Wing Commander, Capt. Thomas Halley, of U.S. Naval Air Station – Oceana located in Norfolk, Va. Also in attendance was Sandy Ebenhoech, program analyst with Lockheed Martin.

The U.S. Navy PBL contract was awarded to Michelin in 2001. Michelin selected Lockheed Martin (MS2), located in Moorestown, NJ, as their logistics partner for the PBL program. “Michelin’s superior products and Lockheed Martin’s supply chain management expertise is a powerful combination,” said Carnes. “The Navy’s aircraft need to be ready to launch at a moments notice. Michelin supports that readiness by providing the right tire at the place at the right time around the globe.”

The contract requires the Michelin-Lockheed Martin team to deliver aircraft tires anywhere in the continental United States in less than two days and less than four days everywhere else around the world – including deployed aircraft carriers. The team has maintained an on-time delivery rate of over 98 percent with an impressive “zero backorders” record. “Michelin’s performance on the contract has been outstanding,” said Capt. Halley. “Getting tires on time has not been an issue for us.”
